Over 11,000 people have been seriously injured in traffic accidents in Cyprus in the last 16 years, according to an NGO.
“In Cyprus in the past 16 years we’ve had 11,280 serious injuries,” Marios Stavrou, chairman of NGO Reaction, Youth for Prevention, told a news conference. “Based on this number, imagine how the lives of thousands of families changed in just a few seconds.”
Stavrou added that there has been a stable reduction in the number of seriously injured people in the last years but there was still a lot to be done to make their lives better.
Reaction is participating in the international survey “My life after the road collision,” carried out jointly by the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims and the Belgian Institute for Traffic Safety.
Its aim is to examine in detail the consequences for people injured in road accidents and possibly identify factors that can help improve their quality of life.
He urged people injured in a road incident to afford some time and take part in the survey.
During the news conference, Reaction also presented the results of a survey on the condition of vehicle tyres on Cypriot roads.
In a sample of 529 vehicles, 39.7 per cent of passenger cars were found to have the wrong pressure in at least one tyre. SUVs were not far behind with 32 per cent.
In the heavier categories, 44.5 per cent of trucks were found to have the wrong pressure in at least one tyre, with light trucks coming in at 26.1 per cent.
“The wrong tyre pressure impedes proper and efficient handling on the road, especially on turns. If the tyre has the wrong pressure there is increased risk of aquaplaning,” he said.
The vehicle also takes more time to come to a stop after braking, he added.
