The trial of 48-year-old who drove into the back of a car in Limassol, causing the death of its driver, 25, was adjourned for January after the defence requested more time to study the evidence.
Yiannis Kyriakides was expected to be formally charged before the district’s Criminal Court on Wednesday but the procedure was postponed for January 8.
The 18 charges he faces include manslaughter, which carries a maximum penalty of life in jail, and causing death due to reckless and dangerous behaviour.
The suspect, who has been in hospital with a broken leg since the incident on October 30, appeared in court in a wheelchair, guarded by police.
The family of the victim, Stephanos Georgiou, was also at the courthouse.
Apart from extra time, the defence also requested a psychological evaluation of their client.
Kyriakides caused Georgiou’s death when the BMW X6 he was driving slammed violently into the back of the victim’s car, stationary at a red light on Enaerios, on Limassol’s main coastal road.
Test results showed that the defendant had been driving under the influence of cocaine, cannabis, and alcohol.
He had no valid driver’s licence and has another case pending against him for speeding. He had also given police a fake name following the accident.
Kyriakides, a taxi driver, had been given a two-month suspended jail sentence earlier this year for speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol. Both his professional and personal driver’s licences had been revoked for six months.
