Police in cooperation with inspectors from the Road Transport Department conducted extensive inspections on buses, lorries, and other vehicles, on Wednesday in an effort to reduce accidents and raise road safety awareness.
Stopping 102 buses and lorries, and 80 other vehicles including motorcycles, they reported five cases of having no road tax, four with no seat belts, one of worn tyres, one with no MOT and four other traffic offences.
Nine drivers were cautioned for various reasons and three drivers will have to re-take the test if they want to continue driving.
The teams conducted the checks between 6.30am to 9am in Astromeritis, and from 9.30am to 11.30am on the main Astromeritis to Troodos road.
The campaign comes in the wake of the July 7 fatal accident in Archangelos involving a city bus in which the driver died and ten more people were injured.
The bus driver died after he was ejected from the vehicle while trying to avoid a car that had overtaken and suddenly slowed down in front of it.
The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt as the bus did not have one, was hurled outside, smashing through the windshield and landing on the road where he was run over by the bus which had not come to a standstill.
The out-of-control vehicle, with 13 passengers on board, then veered into the metal road divider, smashing through it and crossing into the opposite lane, colliding successively with four more cars before coming to a halt. Ten more people were injured, one of them critical.
Police said that since the beginning of 2008, all newly registered trucks and buses must have seatbelts fitted in the front seats, and that drivers were obliged to wear them.
