A 39-year-old Lebanese man died on Wednesday night after he was hit by a car while trying to cross a road in Limassol.
Charbel Elias Ghafary was trying to cross Amathundos Avenue at around 9.20pm when he was hit by a car driven by 23-year-old man from Limassol.
Ghafary was rushed to hospital but he succumbed to his injuries at around midnight.
The 23-year-old driver was arrested.
Preliminary findings showed that the vehicle was moving at a slow to normal speed, according to traffic accident officer Emilios Kafas.
The driver was tested for alcohol, which came up negative. Kafas said the lighting in the area was satisfactory.
He added that investigators were looking into whether the man was wearing dark-coloured clothing and the way he crossed the road.
The driver claimed that the 39-year-old stepped into the road suddenly and he did not have time to react.
Kafas said they were looking for testimony in a bid to reach a sound conclusion about the circumstances of the accident.
