A new design for Tseri avenue has finally been approved by the Strovolos municipal council, it was announced on Thursday.
Works are expected to begin in the autumn of 2021.
The plan by Markides Associates was presented in July 2019, but the construction of the road had been delayed for years before that over disagreements on how the thoroughfare should be developed.
Shop owners and the public works department argued over the number of traffic lanes and whether there should be a median strip in the centre of the road.
The newly designed avenue will include cycle routes, greenery and pavements, a far cry from the dangerous eyesore the road is currently.
According to a statement by the Strovolos municipality, it will be a road with people as a priority, providing a safe environment for pedestrians and highlighting the local character of the area.
Recent traffic counts from the planning department and the public works department showed that the daily flow was some 19,500-21,000 vehicles per day in both directions of the busy road.
